Craigerrr, you would be correct. I removed the tabs cause the cover would always get caught when I went to remove it to get access in the storage area. I covered the hole with some flexible caulking to prevent water from getting into the hole and painted over with black paint.
I wasn't worried that the cover would come off while going down the road either. The back shell keeps a good hold on the front of the cover and the Velcro on the back just really keeps it from bouncing around. As you can see I didn't use a big piece. I cleaned the surface and just as an added precaution wiped it with some alcohol to make sure there was no oily residue for a good bond.
