Replacing Brake Shoes
I've been searching for a forum thread on replacing brake shoes on my TM and I'm coming up short. Can someone direct me to the thread or link. I do understand that if I need to replace my brake shoes it may be simpler to replace the complete back plate and maybe even a good time to upgrade to never-adjust brakes. I did see that east marine is having a sale.
Thanks!

I aways thought etrailer had good prices on the brakes. Also with the self adjusters, you do need to adjust them when you first install them, or there will be to much slack and they will not selfadjust.

We used etrailer for changing to the self adjusting brakes. After viewing the video on their website the change over to the new brakes was not complicated.

Those of you that have upgraded to the self-adjusting (Never-Adjust) style of brakes,,,,can you tell me if you had to replace the outer drum when you made that upgrade or did you only replace the backer plate assembly (pad(s), magnet, backer plate)? I suppose this could be dependent upon the outer drum's wear/condition, but I wondered if the new self-adjusting upgrade made the drum replacement maditory?

I used the same drums years ago when going to the Dexter self adjusters.
There are two surfaces on the drum. One that the shoes make contact with and unless you ran the shoes to metal, you can rough up that surface. The other surface is on the side with the lugs, which makes contact with the magnets that apply the braking force. Many people I have talked with throughout the years, are not happy with the surface that the magnets contact because it normally has some groves worn in it. I have heard of many drums replaced because of those groves.

Just got back from a 2,500 mile trip. During the trip we arrived late at one CS, and found that one brake locked up when trying to back into the site??
We were lucky that ranger Rick drove by, and offered us to exchange our site for a pull through.
The next morning I took apart the brake that was acting up. I found that both brake linings had come off the shoes in that one drum. I disengaged the brake by removed the brake Wires to that brake. The next day I stopped at camping world and another RV store, no luck at getting new brakes. We finished the trip with only one brake.
During the trip I ordered the left and right 10" x 2 1/4 inch never-adjust assembly from etrailer and added a little more to the order to get free shipping.
They installed great using the old drums after roughing up the brake and magnet surfaces. The magnet surface was a little ripley, but not that bad. I did have to loosen the adjustments about 6 clicks.
Have not road tested yet,

Tentcamper - I am curious about a couple of things. I have a 2619. I am going to do a brake job on it. My drums I don't think I will need to change. Did you change the backplate and all? If so was everything assembled already? I cleaned my brakes last summer. They didn't look too bad and they have made it well over 4000 miles since. They are now squeaking really bad and it just bothers me. Anything else in particular that you ran into when you did your brake job? Dave

Yes I got the full assembly for about $46 each for the never-adjust. For the most part it was pull the drums, un-bolt the 4 nuts on the backing plate, disconnect the wires and bolt on the new backing plate and re-wire and dress the wires.
I re-packed my bearings, roughed up the brake shoe and magnet surface on the drums. Also, I tested the shoe tightness before tightening up the large spindle nut. So I could pull it off and loosen the adjustment if needed.
I also, got 2 adjuster plugs. which the never-adjuster assembly has 2 holes per backing plate, un-like the standard brake with one. I also ordered new nuts to get my order on etrailer to $99.
PS on etrailer when I look up the never-adjust brakes I needed, they did have a few youtube's including instructions and one for selecting the correct size. I would double check the measurements of the drums, width of shoes and center to center of the bolts before ordering.

Tentcamper, Thanks. I appreciate the help. Will order from etrailer. They are a little more expensive but have the bolts and everything. Daveinfl
