8/21/2017 - The Great American Eclipse

I got a letter in the mail last week about the restricted parking. My son and his
DW are driving up from Atlanta Monday. I've found parking for their car south
of Dillard for $5. Then they will pay $10/each for access to River Vista, unless
they would rather go to the Rabun Gap - School grounds for the eclipse party
which will only cost them $5/each admission. They might have more fun at the
eclipse party on the school grounds?
As far as T-shirts, I got suckered in. Called River Vista and was lead to believe
they might run out. So, I prepaid for 2 XXL @ $33.40 including tax. They have
them waiting for me at check in time.

Looking forward to a once in a lifetime event!

We are making the journey from upstate NY to Myrtle Beach, SC to see the eclipse a bit further south of Myrtle Beach. Just found out there will be a solar eclipse 4/8/24 with the path of totality passing right over my area. It's kinda taken the "once in a lifetime" aspect away. Gonna be a great trip, nonetheless.

We are trying to find a place to view the eclipse. We hope to find a place near Idaho Falls, ID. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thought I would pass along a few useful items.

NOAA has a site showing you odds of cloudiness. There is an interactive map further down on the page. Look at the legend first to see what the colors mean. The coloring makes the east coast look like a fog bank.

The Smithsonian just realeased an IOS app for the Eclipse. It picks up on your phone's GPS gives you % of coverage at your location or time of totality at the location you plan to be at. Other apps out there, but this one is free without ads.

I've seen people selling these online.

All of these have useful tips on watching the eclipse. One of the best ones I've heard from the pros is, don't take your camera. Enjoy the experience. It's over too quickly to be fooling around with a camera. The web will be full of photos to enjoy. One of my favorites.

We'll be heading out early next week for the Ashville, NC/ Mt Pisgah area. 99.5% totality there. We'll let the weather decide if we head south to Greenville SC or west into Tennessee as far as I need to go.

Since all campgrounds around Idaho Falls are booked, we're going to try to find a BLM site.

Our local schools are keeping the "children" in school so they don't hurt their little eyes looking at the eclipse.

Why not have the parents buy a pair of glasses with a permission slip and send them outside to show them the eclipse?

Use this experience to learn about the solar system, have working models out so they can understand this phenomenon.

And yet, we wonder what's wrong with education.

I don't know if any of you have seen the "Eclipse" USPS stamps but I found out yesterday that they are heat sensitive, and if you hold your warm finger over the image it turns into an image of the moon. Very cool! I'm going to buy some just to keep for fun.
