We're in LA, and ours is ~$90/year or so w/ a $500 or $1000 deductible (I can't remember) with AAA, as part of our auto policy.

You need to bump up that deductible. In the insurance co's eye, that of course decreases their liability by a few hundred bucks per claim, but even more importantly, it decreases the chance that you'll even file a claim at all.

To avoid premium hikes, I don't think it's good practice to file a claim for losses <$500, and with homeowners/renters policies, even <$1000. And if you subscribe to that practice, there's no reason to have a deductible any lower than $500 or $1000 to take advantage of the lower premium. The premium increase/deductible level relationship is not linear; you pay dearly for low deductibles. And IMHO, if you can afford a $13k toy, you should be using insurance only for catastrophic protection. If you bear more of the risk and take reasonable care to avoid damage, you will likely come out ahead.
