Default Highlands Hammock SP, Sebring, FL

Recently, we decided to go to a "Butterfly Festival" at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and to re-visit (after almost 50 years) Silver Springs theme park in Ocala, FL, and to re-visit Highlands Hammock SP in Sebring, FL. All are recommended by us, but specifically, we enjoyed the State Park.

Highlands is an old SP with some new improvements ongoing. The higher numbered sites, we stayed in site #133, are closest to recently modernized bath and toilet facilities, plus they have the improved hookup locations.

Staff was friendly and helpful and allowed us to change sites when we found that another camper had decided to use our original site as his parking place - we actually got much better location as a result.

Before we could get our "perfect level", we had a camp host, our neighbor, and two other campers come by to greet us, ask lots of questions about our TM, and to offer help if needed.

We will go back again to Highlands because it has a large number of hiking trails, bike paths, and wildlife. We only saw some deer but another hiker (a local in the Sebring area) remarked on having seen a couple of bobcats recently.

Mosquitoes are a common occurrence in south Florida. We have used deet-based products over the years, and they work very well for us.

Side comment: Some of our FL SP's are reporting soft/wet ground problems due to all the rain from Issac - our local area had 15 inches with flooding - our local county park had to give an hour's notice to evacuate due to its lake rising close to electrical hookup lines. More heavy rains are now expected to the TS Sandy coming up the coast. This is the perfect season for camping in FL, but watch the weather and cg notices!

Definitely a great place. We've stayed at Highland Hammocks several times in the Winter and have always enjoyed it. The central wooded area with its ancient oaks and wetlands is especially awesome.

Stayed there as a kid in the 60's and 70's. Glad to know it's still there. I remember the wildlife as being awesome.
