Default Sealing windows

I've searched all over the web to find the "proper" method to seal RV windows. Most people seem to just add a bead of caulking around the window. However, I found one method which involves popping out the window, cleaning the surfaces, and reapplying fresh butyl tape. I'm leaning towards doing this as it doesn't seem much more difficult, and leaving a much cleaner look. (I'm really messy when it comes to caulking!)
