Addding drawers to the sofa

Has anyone put drawers in the front of the sofa? It is pretty much waste space as we pack most stuff elsewhere as we find to to hard to get into the sofa storage area.
I thought about installing pre-made drawers by cutting openings through the front of the sofa. I would shore up the sofa front where the between the drawers so it would maintain structural strength.
If anyone has tried this I could use some pointers.
