Default Curiousity question: How many of you can read/write"l33t"?

Not sure how many of you have noticed but the Gen-Y folks, particularly the techies/geeks, are starting to seriously modify our national language. As a computer software "dude", I have quite a bit of contact with the new gen dudes and dudettes so I'm starting to get used to it. This gang is a whole lot more interested in overclocking their computer CPUs (and putting windows into the CPU cases so everyone can see their elite blacklighted cables, colored fans, etc.) than hotrodding their cars. Yeah, some of them are also into "ricing out" their "rides" but I think there are a whole lot more that are into l33t sp34k (elite speaking)...and getting together for "LAN parties" than ricing.

What brought this up is a post at a computer tech forum I also hang out at. The topic, strangely enough, was that famous southern beverage known as "sweet tea". One of the 16 year old dudes posted "sweet tea is like 0v3rcl0ck1ng ur br34kf4s7 " (sweet tea is like overclocking your breakfast) which, for some reason, just totally cracked me up.

Thoughts, comments?

R4y,

Why, y3s I sp34k h4X0r. 4ny0n3 31s3 wh0 w0u1d 1ik3 70 134rn c4n visi7 7his fin3 7r4ns147i0n s337.

I'm not part of the overclocker water cooling gang -- running a water cooled radiator in my Computer...Well...there is just something just plain wrong about that! But hey, I'm on the older side of X.

(Fluent in both Pirate and Hacker speak - but definitely not either)

(Visit this site if you want to reply to Ray in "c001 dud3" (cool dude) speak).

I've been around this group a long time, mid '60s first computer class used what is now the internet when it was still very restricted access, first home computer had to be put together from a kit and and put into a home built box. Hacker at that time was someone who could do something even if he had to work on it all day and night until he figured it out. Now the term is applied only to discribe someone who tries to break into someone else's system. - strange, very strange - i guess that is mass media for you.

BTW, the translator is not true "hack speak" but it will do.

Well, if I'm understanding the the h4X04 crowd correctly, "hacker" is still a term of honor and applies to those who wear the white hats. On the other hand, "cracker" is the word for those who break into systems and wreak havoc. This is a nuance that is lost on the low tech types who make up most of the media.

You are right some hackers refer to the breaking of security as cracking. I was talking of the mass of the population not the hackers. There are also many sub groups one such called phreakers (those who use the phone systems for free) have quite a pull on the younger techies now days.

Of course I'm out of the game now so really don't know what all is going on and would not say if I did.

I've noticed some are better than others, if anyone is really interested just do a Google search on "haxor translator" The sheer number of them out there on the net is just amazing.
