Can someone explain gross combined weight rating?
My Tacoma has a curb weight of 4200 lbs. Towing capacity is 6500 lbs, yet it's GCWR is only 8000 lbs. I would expect the GCWR to be closer to the curb weight plus tow capacity. What am I missing?

according to this article it is vehicle weight+cargo/passengers in truck +TONGUE Weight
so your tacoma is 8000gcwr the tacoma is 4200+ roughly 500 tongue weight that leaves you with 2300 pounds for passengers and cargo

Ok, thanks. The explanation I read earlier stated that it also included trailer weight. Unless I just read that wrong. I'm going with your explanation. Thanks for the link, too. I'll check it out.

just to be clear... that article refers to GVWR not GCWR. I've now read two different sites that say the same thing. From the most recent site:
"A vehicle's GCWR is a specific weight determined by the manufacturer to be the maximum weight of a loaded tow vehicle AND (emphasis mine) its attached loaded trailer. The total weight of the tow vehicle and trailer should never exceed the manufacturer's listed GCWR [source: Ford Motor Company]."
So are they not the same thing? I'm asking because I pulled up the pdf on my Tacoma, and it lists a GCWR specifically--not GVWR.
I promise I'm not trying to be a pain. I just want to make sure I'm safe. All these terms are confusing. I'm doing all this number crunching and trying to estimate all the cargo weight we carry and trying to ultimately figure out if we need a wdh--which is for another thread. (There are already enough threads on that. I've read all the how tos and whys.) I'm just trying to clear up this confusing term and make SURE I understand my TV's limitations.
ETA: I may just call Toyota customer service tomorrow. Maybe their definition is different from what I'm reading.

I always felt that "Gross Combined" was what the TVs systems including brakes was rated for. Since the TM has its own axle and brakes YMMV.
BTW my experience with any "customer service" is that they are script kiddies hired for minimum wage. To get a real answer you need to get a tier or two higher (but those people avoid talking to the "general public".

Gross combined weight rating is the weight the factory allows to include weight of TV, cargo, and passengers plus the towed vehicle loaded.
My Tundra is rated to tow 7200lbs. My TM weighs slightly over 4000lbs. So well within the limit of towing. Now, the combined weight is 10400lbs. That will be the weight of the Tundra, 4000lbs, weight of the trailer, 4000lbs plus passengers, cargo. For me that about 9000-9400lbs. Well within my truck limits.
I assume the factory given combined weight based on brakes, suspension, hitch, strength of frame, tire/wheel sizes, HP, torque, and gear ratio.

Toyota in my manual gives a good example. I think with with the new standard the driver weight up to some number is not included in the weight. Assumption is you will always have a driver.
Look in your manual under towing or tow capacity. There should be an good example. I'm in agreement with the tongue weight plus the curb weight, plus cargo, passengers and fuel. Not sure if the driver at some number between 160 to 200 lbs is included in the weight, but I don't believe you add the driver weight. Toyota adapted the new towing standards in 2012?

Thanks for the input--and all the links.
I'll look in the manual, too. Don't know why I didn't think to do that last night.
