Umm, I'm not sure what you mean by "with the sides the way they are".
I see that you joined just a few days ago, so you may not be aware that the sides don't simply overlap, leaving an open space at the joint. There is a very good flexible seal that closes that gap. The seal extends up and down the sides and across the roof, wherever a moving shell overlaps the other shell, or where a moving shell overlaps a stationary side or end. In most places, there are two seals, one a few inches along the inside wall from the other.
These seals provide weatherproofing (rain, etc) and splash proofing (while the TM is being towed). They seal against air entry, keeping the warm air inside in winter or cool air-conditioned air inside in summer. And incidentally, they keep flying insects out.
Since the seals are a moving part (rather than bolted-down stationary), and they move as the TM is folded up and down, they occasionally do not seal properly - but this is rare, and easily remedied. You will find a thread about this, and bugs getting in - about a month ago.
I have experienced some small gaps around the door - but I have not experienced flying insects getting in, except those that come in when the door is open.
