There are a couple other places to camp in northeastern Utah that may be had this time of year just north Vernal and only a few hours from home. We just returned from Steinaker S. P. & Red Fleet S.P. (spots with full/partial hook ups + showers and more hardscrabble BLM freebies nearby).

Decent, uncrowded (one night, no other human campers at Steinaker) and few other mtbrs @ McCoy Flats and Red Fleet trail head trails, mid week). Markedly, toned down numbers compared to Moab and there are dino tracks to view @ Red Fleet with some impressive hiking trails.

Besides a few other humans there are many deer, hundreds of cotton tails, migrating waterfowl (geese, ducks & a few Sandhill Cranes), serenading owls at dusk and even some wild turkeys amongst the amber leaves of the huge cottonwoods. With the lower elevation, worth it early and late season (IMO).
(We're not birders but really appreciate them more and more-IF you haven't seen it, the '11 movie The Big Year has some great bird shots and don't pass up the very end as they do the credits and show the some odd 750+ birds viewed by Bostick in just one year. Apparently, worldwide there is one birder (from Sri Lanka?) who has viewed over 5000 different species in one calendar year).
