Question Prospective 3023 buyer. Rear A/C question.

I am looking at a 1996 TM model 3023. I can buy it for $1500. It only has one sofa on the sink side of the camper. Queen bed in back & double bed in front. My concern is the roof A/C is located above the Queen bed in the back of the camper. Will the front of camper be kept cool enough? I live in Texas, 30 minutes from the coast. It gets miserable hot & humid during July-September.

How hard would it be to build a "U-shaped" sofa? This would provide more seating than the current 1 sofa.

Is the asking price fair for a 20 year old camper?

Currently have an 18' Jayco Pop Up. The 30' TrailManor 3023 would be a considerable step up in size. Just concerned about the cooling & lack of seating.

The main problem with units that old is that they have a lot of wood components for framing, which rot. Rebuilding them when this happens takes so much time you might wish you bought a newer one.

Even my 2004 with aluminum framing has required substantial attention. Bolts fall out and parts fall off, the awning has had some parts crack and fall off (fortunately not killing it yet), the hold-downs had to be rebuilt, the stove came loose from its cabinet, the kitchen faucet leaks and requires removal of a lot of other stuff so that you can reach it to replace it, etc.

There is also the regular maintenance, you have to clean out and pack the wheel bearings once in a while, service the brakes, trailer tires are perpetually at risk of blowing out, etc.

Regarding the ac, if it is working it will cool it. All older units require some love!

I think the AC was added after it left the factory?? Are the wires for the AC all concealed in the roof and side walls? If so It might be factory installed.

My understanding; prior to 2003 or 2002 the AC units were installed in the side somewhere to the rear of the oven inside the base cabinets.

1500, if its in good shape you can not go wrong. Use it for a year and if you don't like it sell it for 1500.

There was a short period of time in which the A/C was mounted on the rear roof, with the power cord hanging down. You had to plug the cord into an outlet - I don't know where the outlet was located. I think that enough people found this to be annoying that TM moved the A/C unit into one of the kitchen cupboards.

Anyway, a rear roof mounted A/C could have been installed by an owner, but was quite possibly original equipment. An owner retrofit would have been tough (though not impossible) to do, since it would involve changing out all four of the torsion bars that lift the rear shell.

Before finding mine I looked at a 3023. Was standing by the fridge and when the AC was turned on was hit by all kinds of nesting debris.

Suspect you can cool either end (or both) with vent adjustment. 13,500 btuh is quite a bit for 180 sq ft.
