It seems some adapters will work, others will not. I posted the question here:

I believe you had an 07 Explorer which would have been almost identical to my 08. Did yours have an auto release on your parking brake? Or did you just have a 90 adapter that worked? I'm just curious at this point.

My Explorers (both of them, 2002 and 2007) must have had a somewhat different physical layout in that area. Neither had an auto-releaser, but neither of them had the interference problem you are experiencing.

At the time I bought my gauge, there were only two OBD-II gauges on the market - the Scan Gauge and the Aeroforce Interceptor. Although it was more expensive, I bought the Interceptor because I considered it (and still do) superior to the Scan Gauge. Today there are many OBD-II gauges available, and the term "scan gauge" has come to refer generically to the entire market, much as "Xerox" has come to refer to any and all copiers. I do not recall that my Interceptor had a right-angle cable, though.
