Hail Damage TM - buyout or keep?
We have finally received an offer from our insurance company on our TM. Now we have to decide whether to take the buyout (totaled trailer) or take less and keep the trailer and try to sell it ourselves when we find another one. A pic of the roof of the TM is attached. Pretty much the whole roof looks like this, but the sides are not bad at all.
Our questions are these:
1. How likely are we to sell a TM with this much hail damage?
2. Would you buy a TM with this much damage?
3. Would you pay $4,000 for a 2006 2720 otherwise in good condition? lIf not, what would you consider fair?
This will help us decide what to do. To anyone who answers these questions, thanks!
I hope this does not violate the rules of the forum, if it does, please just remove the post.

If the dented roof and broken vent is the only thing wrong with it, I am quite confident you could sell a 2006 2720 within a week for $4k. I might even buy it.

$4k for a TM five years old with cosmetic damage? Yes, as long as the damage is limited to what you've pictured (across the whole roof while closed), and the condition of the unit is otherwise typical of a unit of that age with everything functioning well, I personally think it would quickly sell. On the other hand, I'm kind of a utilitarian guy, so cosmetics don't bother me alot, especially when they are on the roof. Perhaps others will comment, but I don't see any complications that might arise from those dents down the road, aside from not being very pretty. So for those looking for a bargain, especially someone who isn't super handy and doesn't want alot of mechanical issues, your unit would be attractive.
If I was confident of the dents not being a problem later on (and that's my initial thought, but I'd look into it), I think I'd take the $11k and enjoy the dents for another 10 years. Or keep the TM and give me the $11k.

I had my Jayco seriously hailed and kept it for 10 years. The insurance paid it off! After you keep it you will not be able to insure it for its repaired value and may not be able to get insurance other than liability. With that said, your usit is so cheap for the interior and running gear age its a great deal.
Don't forget to make sure that any hail damage on seams must be repaired, maybe with sealing tape. Also, inspect each hail pit to make sure the metal roof is not punctured or cracked. Water leaking into the foam core will eventually break it down and/or cause the metal to delaminate from the foam.
My Jayco had two pits with cracks and I simply forced GE Silicone seal into the crack and sealed the area. (Clean it first so you get a good bond)
Like the previous I bet you could easily sell it for more than 4000,
good luck!

At $4K for a $11K unit with hail damage and a broken vent? You might spend about $100 fixing that. After that figure $100 on chalking if necessary.

No, but that's because I had a 3326!

I would turn my pardette loose on them; she's a great haggler. She got a Disney vacation comp'd a few years back. So she's the one I turn loose on people.
But like everyone else says if that's all the damage and the rest of the TM is good shape it would be hard to pass up...

If we didn't already have a TM that we love, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. On the other hand, I've always wanted to go to TN (part of our family is from there), and what a great adventure it would be to drive there, pick up the TM, and drive it home and resell it.
This could be the great American trip we've always wanted to do!
I'd keep it if I were you, but then I don't care about cosmetics, plus we always store ours open so we rarely see the roof.
If I were you, I'd replace the vent, see if it leaks, and then keep it if there are no problems. For 4K, who cares about what the roof looks like, as long as the rest of it is clean and fully functional?
I'm ready to go, the kids are out of school next week...or we might decide to keep it and sell ours...

I found two dings on my roof that were hail size when I bought my TM. Nothing as extensive as your damage of course. I filled them with 3m 5200 adhesive, leveled them and let them cure for a few weeks. Its hard to tell where the damage was and if I sanded and painted it would be gone. Of course there are lots of other fillers which can be used as well. The 5200 bonds particularly well with painted aluminum cleaned with mineral spirits.
With extensive damage there might be some structural degradation or some loss in insulating value and the honest resale value is severely compromised.
Sorry about your loss.

While I like nice things, I know I don't have the budget for my "stuff" to be new, pristine, and perfect. So, I'm mostly a utilitarian - I have no problem with a few dings or a scratch. Assuming the damage is purely cosmetic..... *shrug* If I had the spare cash right now, I'd buy it!

I bought my 2006 - 2720sl in 2008 for 13,800 with hail damage not as bad as yours. No leaks - no problems - can't see the dings from my lawn chair and we are happy with it. Should be able to get 11k in a heartbeat.
Good luck
Bill
