California/ Gorman
I just figured out that the San Andreas fault goes right through Gorman, and the I5 crosses the fault line 3 times in just a few miles.
As a science teacher, this is an opportunity I can't pass up! Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding exact locations where you can actually see the two rock types (Pacific plate rock and North American rock). I've seen a few pictures of this, but I need a better pinpoint location of such a site. When pulling a trailer, I can't just go anywhere, and I don't know if we will have the time to camp a couple of nights to spend a day looking.
I know most of the faultline will be covered with infrastructure or vegetation, especially since that area of the fault hasn't slipped for a very long time. But, I'm hoping.

Maybe ask this person
http://www.cabrillo.edu/~dschwartz/geology_20.html
My son took his California geology class and he is really knowledgeable about things like this.
Upon edit, it looks like that class is no longer offered (although one of the class descriptions says that there is emphasis on California geology). I think that class was my son's favorite class at Cabrillo.

I've always thought a better access point is on the 14 coming east of Aqua Dulce and as you come down the hill towards Palmdale.

Thanks for the replies so far.
It would be nice to do both I5 and #14. If it were possible, I would leave a few days earlier so I could spend an extra day going via HWY, but time constraints force that to be a future trip.
I think I found one good location on Ralphs Ranch Road. I'd like to check out some of the sag ponds, but that may have to wait.

You can probably camp at Pyramid Lake, down the hill from the Water Project Museum at Vista Del Lago. The museum is worth seeing, and has clean rest-rooms and lots of space to park. There's fast food at the Gorman exit. There are good outlet stores and a food court just before you start the ascent from the North side, I usually take a break here before going up the grapevine: http://www.tejonoutlets.com/
Ft. Tejon historic park has restored adobes and re-enactments, and is another place to camp. And of course all of LA is to the south.
