Default Seating

We're looking at buying a 2417 Sport but haven't decided on the KS or KD model. What we're really concerned with, based partly by comments on this forum, is the seating in the living area. It appears that the KS model has a folding couch, the KD has a 4-person booth style dinette seating, neither of which seem like they'd be too comfortable. Their main purpose seems to be to conceal the furnace and to provide another "sleeping area" (such as it is) and actual seating comfort takes a much lower priority.

We'd like to get two "real" chairs in the living area.....At this point, I'm thinking about buying the KD model and cutting the dinette benches in half (hopefully, I can have the factory put the furnace in the front end of the bench that's closest to the front wall so I won't have to rework that). This may buy back enough prime real estate from the "dining room" so we can re-purpose it for seating in the "living room"....Any other ideas???

Have any of you folks got two "real" chairs in your TM?? What type/model/brand did you go with?? Any ideas would be helpful.........THANX!!!

There are usually only two of us using the trailer so we have the 2720 SL. It works great for us. The couch is not the most comfortable but not bad. When folded down as a bed it works only for one for sleeping and it is ok. We keep it folded down a lot and just lay against the side walls with a pillow. It works well for reading or just lounging around. If you want to sit up you can always use the chair. We have replaced the chair with a Lazy Boy lounger. Putting the couch up and down is fast and easy if you get company and need additional seating.

I don’t know if you are aware but there are fold out tables for in front of the couch; add a camp chair and you have seating for four. It works well for when you need to eat inside or want to play cards etc. I don't think another chair would fit in ours and be practical. When we have had a camp chair in there it feels a bit cramped. We like the open feeling of this model. The storage area under couch is good sized and ours is full. I am not sure I would want to give that up.

We actually consider the setup we have ideal.

We just went from a 2417 Sport (original model, not a slide) to a 2417 KD. We got the Standard width in our new one, not the Sport.

What I can tell you about the dinette in the Sport is, we have had three of us sitting and talking, or eating, and it works. Normally it is just my wife and I, but I do take it hunting, and have three adult men in it. While eating is fine, just lounging has lots of legs in the dinette area. I found a small folding stool with a back, in my farther-in-law's stuff, and use that inside.

Now that we have the 2417 KD Standard, I plan to use the stool, or a camp chair, for a third adult, just for lounging. I don't find the benches uncomfortable, and my wife and I could lounge on the benches for a few hours, if it was raining or too cold to sit outside. Putting a conventional chair in the slide model would be tight. We got one of the chest of drawers, and if we put a normal chair in our Standard, it would be tight. I don't see two conventional chairs possible in the Sport.

If I was looking to add some additional seating, I would go with the couch model. BUT, if you want to use that as a bed, the couch has a narrower bed arrangement than the dinette, due to the arms of the couch. You get about 6" more bed length in the dinette model.

Just my thoughts on the topic, having had a dinette in both Sport, and Standard.

I measured my 2417 KD Standard. See the image for dimensions.

The slide has 2" walls on each side, so width of the slide is 4" narrower than the inside of the trailer. I measured the depth of the dinette to the edge of the sleeping surface, not the edge of the slide. The slide extends another inch from the sleeping surface.

The SPORT will be 6" narrower in all width dimensions. Keep that in mind.

I could not measure a KS, but I assume the slide box is the same size. Due to the sofa arms, the width of the sleeping surface was, I believe, about 6" less than the dinette width. We did look at both Sport and Standard before we decided on the KD Standard.

Hope the measurements give you some info, so you can measure chairs, or layout some string on your living room floor, and re-create the slide end, so you can position furniture and sleeping positions, to help with a decisions.

I use to camp with 6 (4 kids) I would step up to the 2720 with the 2 bunk ends. That will give you sleeping for 6 and a few more feet inside. I would keep a pup tent in the camper and in good weather some of the kids will want to sleep outside.

Arky, keep in mind that the slide floor is about 1½" higher than the main floor (it has to slide over the main floor to close). If you shortened the dinette seats, not all chair legs would be on the slide. You could cut the chair legs, or bolt extensions to some, but neither seems feasible, to me.

Just want you to be aware of the different floor heights.

To me, a couch (SL) would be the way to go. You could also get a contoured cushion for the couch, which would make it more comfortable.

SO, Love2Camp, if I read your pic correctly, the KD (standard) has about 33" x 80" in the "living area"?? (The bed end is 78" wide, correct?).....So in a Sport model I'd be looking at 33" x 74"??

Is your furnace in the curb side bench, near the door end??

The curb (door) side of the "living" floor has 33" between the slide end and the door guard (there is a triangle of wood there, to keep anything from sliding in front of the door), while the street (refirgerator) side is 35" between the slide edge and the refrigerator cabinet. The sleeping surface, when the dinette is converted to a bed, is 76" wide.

On the king bed end, the king bed is 78" wide. There is a frame that holds the bed, which explains the 2" difference between the bed width and the width of the main box.

Yes, the "living" floor in the Sport would be 74" wide, as all the width dimensions are reduced by 6" for the Sport model.

The furnace is at the front of the trailer, but it extends further than halfway back in the dinette seat. The picture below was taken from above, with the front of the trailer to the left of the photo. If you took out some of the dinette seat, you would not remove an entire half.
