A few things that immediately come to mind -- apart from the typical tourist things:
- check out if there are any concerts at the Esplanade. It can make for a great evening. Every July 4th (or at least they did when I lived there) the Boston Pops played, and one of the tunes was the 1812 Overture, with live canon firings. Very impressive, although that specific concert is famous, and a trillion people are always there. It's easily accessible from the T; Charles St stop, I believe, right near MGH.
- take the 2-hour drive up to the Maine coast, both to take in the scenic beauty and to sample a dockside lobster dinner at a Mom and Pop place fresh off the boat.
- If you decide to go out to the Cape, avoid going out over the weekends as traffic is a nightmare, especially during the summer.
- Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are cool places to visit, but they both require a ferry trip. Rent a bike when you get there, and tour around.
