Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campsites
I’m too new to this forum to know if anyone has already mentioned “The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort” in Orlando, FL. Nothing is cheap at Disney, ever, but they do give value for the money in my opinion. I camped here a few years back and definitely plan to go back with or without the grandkids.
The campgrounds are clean, modern, and well kept. (See picture/details at link below) Of course, the attractions at DisneyWorld are great, and we’ve always found the lines to be shortest/coolest during the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas (exclusive of holidays).
On warm days, the best way from the Campsite to the attractions is by boat across the lake to the monorails. Always too much to do and too little time.
Here’s a link to the campsite:

We stayed at Ft Wilderness last year. No Kids!!! We had a ball. Park your car and use the Disney transportation. Hope to go back again sometime.

On our first trip in the TM, we spent 7 nights there in August/September. Only did 4 park days so we had time to enjoy the campgrounds. There are two swimming pools in the campground, one was normal, other one was well suited for kids, 3ft max and had a wet slide. They also had lots of pool activities to keep the kids entertained -- I thought that was a nice touch. Oh, and we took our bicycles, glad we did, needed them to get around in the campground!

We (myself and 13yo daughter) are booked for this coming April school vacation. Been to Disney many times but never at the campground, just got the TM last year and really loving it. Did most of the new england states last season, missed VT. Really looking forward to the Disney trip.

Value season (Fall and early winter) are considerably less expensive, if you have AAA you can also get a 10-20% discount though there is an allotment of discounted sites and if they're gone you won't get the AAA disc. If you can't get the dates you want trying, reserve a larger block of days , and call back later and cancel the days you don't need (say you want 5 days but they say there is no availability, try reserving a 14 day block containing the 5 you need). Partial sites have water and electricity and are cheaper; it's an acceptable practice if you have a tote to dump at any open full hookup site. Parital sites are supposed to be for popups and tents, but lots of people with smaller hybirds are allowed to reserve there; although with a 3326 you might be pushing the envelope. A real good resource is http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24

We did just that a few years ago. We were going to move to the site on the last day, but they told us to just stay where we were...

Last time I was in Orlando (Disney Site), I went over to Winter Park, FL, which is not very far and is a different world from Disney. Downtown is quiet and one can sit on bench swings and watch the hikers/bikers go by while eating delicious ice cream. The hiker/bikers come through Winter Park on an old rail road track that has been converted and paved into a hiking/biking/skateboarding trail called the Cady Way Trail.
Although the link below (1st link) shows pictures from the "South Head" (Orlando) of Cady Way Trail", the newer "North Head" path actually starts in Winter Park and heads Westward through mostly rural, old Florida areas. Along the way, there is a small botanical park that has a long board walk that reaches out through restoration lands to one of the "Chain of Lakes" (Lake Apopka?) where the historical marker states quite honestly how the area looked when only Native Americans were there and how it changed up to current times including who killed most all the fish in the "Chain of Lakes". I went in August and early in the morning! In the Winter time, I would pick a sunny day to go when it's usually in the 70's .
Nice trip for kid and adults to bike or lengthy hike. After the 1st link, I've also put a link to the home site for "Rails to Trails" projects in all states. Some really great non-commercial fun!

Has anyone gone from So Cal or vicinity to Fort Wilderness? Is it worth it or would it be better to fly? We have DLand here but the whole Florida theme park thing might be something to do in the next couple years. Is that more of a Spring Break or Christmas thing or has anyone done it in the summer?

Can't Comment on the travel aspect but:
In early December 2009 we spent 5 days at Disneyworld's Ft Wilderness but we stayed in one of the cabins(Which were actually very nice!). We went with our daughter and her DH and our two very young grandchildren. It was the only time of year that we would take children that young because of the mild weather and not so crowded at the parks. We still had the Christmas decorations but we avoided the extreme crowds that always come near or on Christmas.
In August/September we spent a week camping at Ft wilderness. Hot, yes - humid, yes -- but still enjoyable (swimming in the afternoons and at night was great). On our arrival at Ft Wilderness is was almost empty but by the next weekend it was pretty full(Had a triathlon event scheduled). Park crowds were so-so, always a bit more crowded on Friday & Saturday nights compared to regular weekdays.
We scheduled both our trips to avoid crowds at the parks which can really make the fun level go down in a hurry
