I like all the recommendation for your Pilot towing question. I tow a 2720 with a 2010 Pilot, EXL 4WD. Have WDH and upgraded tires to D rating. Fine print to consider in your Honda owners manual is the vehicle tow capacity is reduced 2% for every 1,000ft of elevation. I live at 8,000ft so that's 16% (720 lbs.) reduced off the 4,500 max tow weight (2 occupants) which puts me right about at max, which is not where you want to be. Climbing a Pass? Head winds? Heat? Better not carry any water and use extreme caution loading gear. At sea level I notice much greater ease in tow ability. Even 3,000 or 4,000ft is easy. The other subjective is, how far are you going? 80 miles to the lake is easy. 1,500 miles to Yellowstone is ... another story.
We're headed out cross country in a few days. 6 week roll along to Disney World. Carrying no water (other that 3gal in the toilet), and 500lbs. of gear, (weighed), distributed in vehicle and TM. Purposely headed away from high elevations.
Hope this helps.
