Wow! Someone apparently over-adjusted the brakes - WAY over-adjusted! It is a good thing the parts didn't drop into the wrong place and lock up the wheel.
Did you buy self-adjusting brakes for the replacement? Very little added cost, and will prevent the same problem from ever happening again.
