It only takes about 15 seconds to open the slide, and it does not deplete the battery. We've not had any issues other than when we accidentally broke the switch first trip out, and we had to open/close manually, which is not too much fun! (The slide is heavy with the electric motor attached).

To Bill's point, we never had problems even before we added the suitcase solar panels, but our model did come with an 80W panel installed, so we have always had a way to recharge.
