We ended up staying in Johnson Canyon, Grand Staircase (30 min. from wave lottery). BLM boon-docking. Had a great sight. We drove the road to State Line campground to get to the wave hike, and you don't want to drive that road before the spring grading has happened with TM. Just got home and have only processed the pics for the wave. If you are interested they are posted in my albums on flickr that can be accessed from the link in my signature. We got our permit on the third try. Best hike we have ever been on and we have done a few. Should have Antelope Canyon up in the next few days.
