In my opinion, summer is a perfect time to hit the higher elevations and I see your location is Birmingham, so it would be perfect to visit the mountain areas of AL, TN, GA, NC etc. They are closer by so you could make the most of shorter weekend trips. Like others mentioned, reservations in summer could be tough, but there are plenty of good choices, so if you start now, you could possibly find something.

Even up high, you can anticipate needing AC during the day but maybe getting a nice break at night, depending on the weather.

Try Maggie Valley/Waynesville in NC, there are some campgrounds and not extremely crowded with tourists. But still close enough for day trips into the Smokey NP, Pisgah National Forrest, and Asheville, etc.

Even into the Gatlinburg and Dolly Wood areas, if you have an extra day or two to spare.
