I would not consider leaving it partly open. The lift mechanism, as it is connected to the shells, is not designed for the forces that will result from unsecured shells that wobble and sway in the wind.

Thanks Bill and others. You have convinced me to store it closed or get the RV version of this fabric shelter to leave it open.
