Two things to consider
Snow. Not a problem in Alabama, of course, but in other areas, don't let it accumulate on an open camper. Check the Owner's Manual.
Wind. Very much a potential problem in Alabama, and many other places as well. An open TM stands up well to some pretty strong winds, but hurricane force may be another matter.
I would not consider leaving it partly open. The lift mechanism, as it is connected to the shells, is not designed for the forces that will result from unsecured shells that wobble and sway in the wind.
