Can't Comment on the travel aspect but:

In early December 2009 we spent 5 days at Disneyworld's Ft Wilderness but we stayed in one of the cabins(Which were actually very nice!). We went with our daughter and her DH and our two very young grandchildren. It was the only time of year that we would take children that young because of the mild weather and not so crowded at the parks. We still had the Christmas decorations but we avoided the extreme crowds that always come near or on Christmas.

In August/September we spent a week camping at Ft wilderness. Hot, yes - humid, yes -- but still enjoyable (swimming in the afternoons and at night was great). On our arrival at Ft Wilderness is was almost empty but by the next weekend it was pretty full(Had a triathlon event scheduled). Park crowds were so-so, always a bit more crowded on Friday & Saturday nights compared to regular weekdays.

We scheduled both our trips to avoid crowds at the parks which can really make the fun level go down in a hurry
