My heart bleeds for you. It is among the reasons why I avoid CA (and a bunch of other states).
Would you do us a favor and keep them there? When they move here the first thing they want to do is raise our taxes...
The food is great just about anywhere around I-10 south. Lots of good camping as long as you don't mind flat. Snow is something that when we get enough to stick to a blade of grass, they have to close school.
So come for a visit, just don't stay ;-)
