This sounds like a fairly reasonable and inexpensive solution to your problem. As long as you can have the foliage viewable from the street then what is to stop you from putting this bamboo all around the air conditioner on all sides just like Kidraz suggested - definitely something to consider. Now you only have foliage visible from the street.
