Default wilderness/mill creek

We've stayed in both campgrounds -- Wilderness several years ago when we had a tent, and Mill Creek last summer with the Trailmanor.

Both are crowded during the summer. Campsites are very close together. In Wilderness, though, you are in a state park, so there are hiking trails and there is lots of wildlife to see. We had a campsite right along the beach, and there was a playground for the kids. I think it was a 15 min. drive to town. In Mill Creek, you're only a mile or so from Mackinaw City, and there are lots of campsites where you have a view of the bridge all lit up at night. Note, though, that Mill Creek campground is a privately owned camp across the street from the state park. Mill Creek State Park is pretty neat, with logging demonstrations, a zip line, a climbing wall, and nice trails -- no camping, though.

Where you stay really depends on how you're going to be spending your time. When we stayed at Wilderness, we were "camping" and spent a lot of time in the state park, so it was a good choice. When we stayed in Mill Creek, it was home base for seeing the city, forts, parks, and taking a day trip to the island; again, a good choice for what we had planned. If you choose Mill Creek, I'd check out the map of the campsites and try to get one along the beach and NOT in the designated RV section unless you want to be inches away from a bunch of huge trailers with no shade. Some parts of the campground are wooded and are along the water. Great views there at night.

The island is very touristy but worth a day trip -- especially if you rent or take bikes and spend the day exploring the island outside of the downtown area.

Have a great trip!
