I think the block is to catch part of the door when it's folded back. I can't quite see what's on the end of it, but it could be a magnet or rubber bumper. On older models that side of the cabinet is not at a right angle or not so close to the door, so there's more room.
The switch might be for the outside light. Larger models put that switch on the front shell to the right of the door viewed from inside. It might be that a smaller model doesn't have space for that.
