Castle Valley Overlook, Moab, UT

Part of our week was spent at 7500 feet, SE of Moab. Had to go into 4-low to get over some rough rocks in the last 100 yards, but it was worth it!

That is a nice area, we usually stay at the BLM CG called Wind Whistle.

Wind Whistle looks nice. But, good chance for neighbors in a BLM campground. We had no neighbors for miles. :)

Oh, my! I would love to know more about where this is. Google Maps finds the town of Castle Valley, but not the overlook. Can you clue me in a bit closer?

Maybe a quarter-mile inside Manti-La Sal National Forest, off of Sand Flats Road. There is a campsite just before the 4wd portion, which is closer to a vault toilet.

I did use 4wd low range to get over some of the rough rocks, just to keep the shaking down. The rest of the trip is just gravel roads, once you leave Moab.

No water available, no electric. No fee. Make sure you have plenty of Lynx Levelers, or something else, as it is not an improved (leveled) site. A number of options as to where to park the TM. Tight turnaround, though, so before you pass the lower campsite, walk up to make sure you can maneuver. I don't think a 2922 would make the turnaround, but a 2720 may.

If you go, there are dinosaur tracks in the rock, if you take a half-hour drive. 38.61613° -109.22305° and 38.61546° -109.22287°.

Many thanks, LoveToCamp. I appreciate your use of Lat-Lon, which pins it right down tight. I note that you did not use GPS format, so you are not a geocacher. Sad, since there are several caches within a mile or two of that spot!

Bill - I may not use the format you are accustomed to, but in my job, this is the required coordinate format. I find it much easier to work with than DD mm ss, or DD mm.mmm. Just my preference, since I have been working with that format for 8 years.

I camped within about 100 feet of a cache at our first stop, and had the coordinates in my GPS, but forgot to look for it. I was too busy relaxing and talking with relatives we camped with. I forgot to look to see if there was a cache close to this campsite. Have to remember to look some up for our South Dakota trip in two weeks.
