Mark your calendar for these fee-free days in 2011:

* January 15-17 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday (new)
* April 16-24 - National Park Week
* June 21 - First day of summer (new)
* September 24 - Public Lands Day
* November 11 - Veterans Day

But also, many of the 394 national parks NEVER charge an entrance fee.

We are old enough to have the magic card, so every day is free to get in:D:D

Our experience with fee free days is stay home and pop some popcorn.

Are the "free"days that bad?
I guess it depends on how popular a specific park is?

We have lived close to two extremely popular national parks, Grand Canyon NP and Rocky Mountain NP. Both of these parks are accessible from very large metropolitan areas (Phoenix and Denver) by a pretty easy day trip. They can both also be swamped on any given day during the summer and I wouldn't go to either one on a free day if they paid me. I imagine the more remote parks would be less likely to be that way. That being said, if I were going to utilize the fee free days, I'd go for one with expensive entrance fees as they vary widely, especially between the parks and the monuments.
